Thank you so much for joining us in this interview series. Before we dive into our discussion about communication, our readers would love to “get to know you” a bit better. Can you share with us the backstory about what brought you to your specific career path?
Thank you for inviting me to the series!
I’ve been a writer and a talker from the time I was a child — always journaling and enjoying any written assignment in school, always the first to raise my hand to speak out. When I was in junior high, a teacher told me that my writing style was very suited to the spoken word. She recommended I think about a career in writing plays or movie scripts. I kept on writing and was fortunate to attend one of the world’s great writing schools: Middlebury College. By the time I graduated from Middlebury, I had developed an interest in politics, so I moved to Washington, DC to explore what writers could do in the world of politics and government. Speechwriting quickly emerged as the answer, and I went on to write speeches for cabinet members including the Treasury Secretary, Labor Secretary and Attorney General.
Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started your career?
