T hank you so much for joining us in this interview series. Before we dive into our discussion about communication, our readers would love to “get to know you” a bit better. Can you share with us the backstory about what brought you to your specific career path?
By virtue of who I am, race and identity, and bridging divides, has always been central to my life. I’m the daughter of a Japanese immigrant father and a White American mother; born and raised in Los Angeles with summers spent in Tokyo; a ballet dancer for 13 years until multiple back surgeries for scoliosis ended that dream; a lover of music, language, history, and fighting for those whose voices don’t often get heard. I have been having difficult conversations all my life, both personally and professionally, and have spent many years learning about — and now teaching about — how to listen, learn and act in support of all of humanity.
Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started your career?
Oh, this is a hard one! I think the stories that stand out to me are after people have heard me speak, or have heard our podcast, and write in or tell me that my using my voice has given them the courage to use theirs. It makes all of the talking I…
